We are delighted to introduce our first Artist Residency at the Nordic Art Agency. Swedish fibre artist Mia Hultgren will be relocating her studio space to the 1st floor of the gallery for a 2 month period.
ASPECTS will be a visual journey of Mia Hultgren’s creative response to the gallery space creating a body of work which will be exhibited as a solo exhibition in October based on the works created during the Artist Residency.
Through my work, I seek to illuminate the seemingly paradox of individuality and interconnectivity: individual components, when pieced together, construct a grander whole - a comprehensive unit that is the sum of its myriad parts.

“Without a surprise in the process of creating, it would be meaningless to me. I need to develop and learn while making.” - Mia Hultgren
Mia Hultgren on the Artist Residency:
Upon being granted the distinguished privilege of an Artist Residency at the Nordic Art Agency, I found myself with the opportunity to transplant my creative studio into the gallery, a space uniquely situated adjacent to a bustling shopping centre, struck a chord of inspiration in me. This unique juxtaposition, of art and commerce, of quiet contemplation and vibrant human interaction, provided a fertile ground for my imagination, as I often draw profound influence from the ambience of my environment.
Mia Hultgren on her creative environment:
My aspiration is to allow my creative output to organically evolve within this space, dynamically reacting to, and co-existing with, the flux of the surrounding environment. The influence of my physical surroundings on my creative thought process is an undeniable aspect of my artistic work.
Mia Hultgren on the Nordic Art Agency:
This gallery space, adorned with big floor-to-ceiling windows, turns me as an artist into an exhibit, scrutinized like an object. Yet, it simultaneously presents an aperture to the outside world, giving me a panoramic view of the ceaseless human current that flows through the shopping centre.
The perpetual stream of people, ambling through shopping streets and bustling centres, serves as a living illustration of our interconnectedness. Each individual, though unique and distinctive, is a mere cog in a larger societal machinery. Collectively, we contribute to the vibrant tapestry of life, forming an intricate web of human connection.
Therefore, the thematic focus of this Art Residency will be the exploration of individuality and interconnectivity. Through my work, I seek to illuminate the seemingly paradox of individuality and interconnectivity: individual components, when pieced together, construct a grander whole - a comprehensive unit that is the sum of its myriad parts.
Mia Hultgren will be working in the gallery during the residency and can be visited during gallery opening hours. There will be an artist talk given by Mia at during Malmö Gallery Weekend on September 22nd.
Aspects, the solo exhibition of works by Mia Hultgren created during the Artists Residency will open on Thursday 19th of October in the solo exhibition room on the 1st floor.
