Sculpture Evening with Hugh Chapman

  • Nordic Art Agency at Hansa 52 Stora Nygatan Malmö, Skåne län, 211 37 Sweden (map)

British sculptor Hugh Chapman will be joining us in our new gallery location for an evening of sculpture. Into the Light is the first exhibition of Hugh’s sculpture in Scandinavian and this will be an opportunity to meet the artists and discuss his work.

Join us in the gallery for drinks, art and conversation with Hugh Chapman.

INTO THE LIGHT

Sculptor Hugh Chapman is based in West Sussex, England close to the undulating hills of the South Downs. Chapman’s sculptural quest for a sense of harmony and solace is harnessed in the rhythm of nature’s systems which flow freely in the countryside that surrounds him. This is the platform for Hugh’s expression of line, form and dynamism found in his sculpture. His sculptural abstractions, which are an emulation of his emotional responses rather than a direct response to any real world forms, are where he finds a sense of spirituality.  They are an exploration into the transitional qualities of nature and elements that are unseen, but are present and linger forever.

I tend to have a three dimensional model in my mind, if I break it down into two dimensions to draw it, I can break my mental model.

So I avoid this, I bypass the drawing completely and go straight into three dimensionality. This way is most precarious.

Hugh’s sculptures are complex and challenging to cast. Coupled with his dedicated pursuit for beauty and perfection they are wonderfully delicate and sensual yet powerful and formidable.

New Landscape

Each sculpture commands the highest level of craftsmanship from the UK foundries who work closely with Hugh, casting his works in stainless steel and bronze using the tradition lost wax casting technique.

Following a dissociative episode, brought on by a traumatic brain injury and additional complications, Hugh learnt from an earlier age the skills needed to regenerate and overcome extraordinary circumstances. This near death experience by Hugh has continued to inform the evolution of his work as a sculptor and craftsman.

Spirit

I had an experience of staggering beauty as for a short time my consciousness was separated from my physical state. It was beautiful. I was without earthly bounds. I made a decision to return to my physical state, I think it was really naive in a way, I thought everything would be okay.

It is a great honour to represent the sculpture of Hugh Chapman at the Nordic Art Agency and in our latest International Art Pop Up.

Into the Light is the first time that such a large collection of Hugh’s sculpture will be exhibited in one location. At the exhibition there will also be the opportunity to view a short film by Hugh Chapman which explores his artist’s journey, influences and vision as a sculptor.
