We are delighted to introduce, “I think you are very handsome….” a solo exhibition of French figurative artist Frédéric Blaimont at the Nordic Art Agency. The exhibition opens with a private view on Thursday 25th in the Large Gallery Room on the first floor.
The gallery has represented Frédéric Blaimont’s painting since 2021 an was initially drawn to the balance between acute observation and wit.
Frédéric Blaimont takes an uncompromising look at the people who surround us but whom we don't look at.
He does not try to represent the reality of the subject but to propose to the other’s eye what he perceives as essential. It is a narrative painting freed from conventions that wants to say as little as possible in order to say as much as possible.
If the people around us and their banality remain Frédéric Blaimont's constant theme, he has not ceased to evolve in his modes of representation.Having stripped his characters of any environment, he offers us a much freer approach and a more contemporary visual style. The representation of his fellow human beings becomes a pretext for the construction of works where the canvas becomes a space for visual games. He opposes masses to voids, he plays with a pencil stroke in front of a half-tinted portrait and he replaces the drapes with flat tints.
Blaimont’s paintings show an accuracy that hits the mark every time, an angle which captures the human in its singularity while underlining our relationship with the body, a relationship of which our western civilisation cannot really be proud. The ravages of junk food or overeating are blatantly obvious in these paintings, without any complacency.
In truth each one of us has already crossed paths with Frédéric Blaimont’s models, these average couples whose tragic presence we must acknowledge, no matter how hard.
To accompany the exhibition we shall be showing a short version of the award-winning film Casting based on Frédéric Blaimont’s artist career in our video installation room. Full version subtitled screening will also be held during Malmö Gallery Weekend later on in September.
Register for an early preview of the digital exhibition catalogue which will be release on Monday 22nd August.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Vernissage on Thursday 25th August
