We are delighted to share a series of Jay Pingree’s painting from the Commuter series at Hansa Malmö in our art installation on the second floor.
Artist Jay Pingree
Jay Pingree is an American figurative artist with a unique distorted figurative style. He captures figures in motion on camera using long exposure, reducing the detail to shapes and bodies in transit. In his studio he recreates the flow and rhythm in acrylic, using rapid abstract brushstrokes and calculated gestures. His paintings are sensitively observed producing minimalistic, authentic images, but the sense of chaos and continuum is ever present.
“I cull most of my subject matter from the streets and subways of New York. I attempt to capture the congestion and pace of urban environments. Most of the figures in my work are mere glimpses of the subjects, much like one’s experience in a densely populated urban environment.” – Jay Pingree
The figures themselves feel random and almost anonymous. The abstraction of limbs, clothing and accessories which present a tangled interpretation of human form, camouflaged by motion which is where the mind is left to create.
