We are delighted to begin 2021 with our first ever exclusive online exhibition in partnership with Artsy.
The modus of this exhibition by Jo Hummel centres around the impulse to nurture. Her painted paper collages embrace comfort, harmony and reflect the need to self-soothing and feel warmth. Colours and structure offer support in robust, yet feminine and undulating compositions.
Jo Hummel chooses humble watercolour paper, textured, thick and absorbent, which sits quietly upon plywood. These elements are both quite unrefined and feel expectant. The layers are then established, emulsion and Indian ink are added and it is in that process where she creates spontaneous variations of space, colour and form. Visual experiments frequently determine the outcome.
'Be Gentle....' is a meditation of the last 12 months and how the pandemic has informed the work and modus of Jo Hummels' practice. This is her first exclusively online exhibition, which seemed appropriate during this period of isolation, to offer some virtual and visual nurturing through her painting.
In recent months Jo Hummel has been asking herself,
‘Who is the painting performing for?’
As she describes,
"When I arrive at the studio to create a work it is very often without a plan. I rely on repetitive actions and routines as starting points, from which, spontaneity and originality are born. In a way, I am simulating, observing and investigating an inner relationship to change. I see visual motifs in the work which I find reassuring, calming, soothing, energising, empowering, and I have a notion that the subconscious is guiding the conscious self in some profound, personal, developmental way."
